The United States legal system at both the federal and state level is derived primarily from the English common law system, which was in effect at the time of the Revolutionary War. The Constitution enumerates the powers of the federal government and circumscribes the power of the States. The Constitution is the supreme law of the United States. States may grant their citizens rights in addition to their Constitutional rights, so long as they do not infringe upon any constitutional rights. As a result State laws vary widely from one state to another on everyday matters such as accident, bankruptcy, criminal and divorce law.
